A Vision of Healing and Community: FHLBNY Contributes $150,000 to St. Croix Foundation
In a testament to our commitment to community development and cultural preservation, the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York (FHLBNY) provided a $150,000 grant to the St. Croix Foundation for their
Healing Humanities: Sunday Market Square project. This contribution represents not just financial support but a shared vision of empowerment and resilience for the historic Sunday Market Square in Christiansted, St. Croix.
The Sunday Market Square holds historical significance as one of the oldest planned public squares under the U.S. flag, which dates to Danish colonial rule. Initially a space for enslaved Crucians to
connect, trade, and find solace on Sundays, the Square evolved into a vital community hub. However, neglect and natural disasters left it in disrepair. The Healing Humanities project aims to revitalize this historic site into a model of holistic community development and cultural preservation.
The grant provided by FHLBNY in September 2023 played a pivotal role in acquiring a crucial property for incorporation into the Alexander Theater Cultural & Performing Arts Center and Community Disaster Shelter footprint. This acquisition significantly expanded the theater and disaster shelter, increasing the capacity to accommodate 703 residents during times of crisis.
The Sunday Market Square redevelopment includes:
- 7 Units of Affordable Rental Housing
- Cultural Arts and Convening Spaces, including the historic Alexander Theater
- Nonprofit Co-Working & Collaboration Centers
- Resilience Corridor with a Disaster Shelter & Resilience Hub
- Affordable Commercial Rental Space
- Urban Green Space and Play Area
This collaboration supports both the immediate housing needs of the community and lays the foundation for long-term resilience, cultural enrichment, and economic growth. With the support of
FHLBNY and dedicated partners, the Sunday Market Square project will continue to evolve into a beacon of resiliency, cultural heritage, and economic empowerment.
The Federal Home Loan Bank of New York’s grant to the Healing Humanities: Sunday Market Square project exemplifies their commitment to fostering thriving communities and preserving cultural legacies. Through partnerships and impactful investments, FHLBNY helps to shape a more resilient and vibrant future for St. Croix and beyond.
