Located in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood, The Rise is a symbol of hope, resilience, and community investment. Supported by $811,243 from the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York’s Affordable Housing Program (AHP), the seven-story mixed-use development combines affordable housing, supportive services, and sustainable design for residents and the surrounding community.
Operated by the Women’s Prison Association (WPA), The Rise provides 71 AHP-assisted apartments for individuals who have experienced homelessness or incarceration, helping residents access safe, stable housing and services that support long-term success.
The fully electrified building features photovoltaic solar panels and has earned Passive House International and Enterprise Green Communities certifications. It was also recognized through NYSERDA’s Buildings of Excellence Award and New Construction – Housing program incentives.
Designed to promote well-being, The Rise includes inviting stairways, outdoor gathering spaces, fitness amenities, and bicycle storage. Trauma-informed design features, including natural light, calming interiors, clear sightlines, and access to nature, help create a welcoming and supportive environment.
Residents have access to case management, life-skills training, trauma recovery support, employment assistance, financial literacy education, and wellness programs. Nearby transportation, libraries, healthcare facilities, and community organizations further connect residents to essential resources.
The Rise reflects the power of mission-driven partnership. With support from FHLBNY, HSBC Bank, N.A., New York State Homes and Community Renewal, the Homeless Housing Assistance Program, NYSERDA, TD Bank, and the New York City Employees’ Retirement System, the development advances housing stability, sustainability, and opportunity in Brooklyn.
AHP is a subsidy program in which funds are awarded through a competitive process to member lenders in support of projects that create and/or preserve housing for lower income families and individuals.
