In Caguas, Puerto Rico, a partnership between Habitat for Humanity of Puerto Rico (HFHPR) and Banco Popular de Puerto Rico is helping individuals and families achieve long term housing stability. With the support from the Federal Home Loan Bank of New York’s (FHLBNY) Affordable Housing Program (AHP), HFHPR was awarded a $270,000 AHP subsidy to rehabilitate 18 owner-occupied homes.
For Rosita Meléndez Carrasquillo, one of the Home Repair Program beneficiaries, the impact of the rehabilitation extends well beyond physical improvements.
“Before, every rainfall was a source of worry; I couldn’t sleep peacefully and was always afraid the water would get into my home” she recalls.
“Now, my house is safe and full of peace, where I can rest and enjoy time with my family without fear. My granddaughter loves visiting and staying over, and I finally feel the calm I’ve been longing for. Peace begins at home, and today I feel it fully.”
Through this effort, HFHPR, Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, and FHLBNY continue to demonstrate a shared commitment to strengthening communities and preserving safe, affordable housing across Puerto Rico.
